Adopt a Dog

Sadie
Sadie is a spayed two-year-old Dachshund (smooth dapple). She was surrendered by her owner because she enjoys chasing and killing chickens, but other than that is a great gal. She is very friendly and would make a lovely companion.

Logan
Logan and his three littermates are six weeks old and are Pointer mixes. They and their mother, Lolita, came from a shelter in Leavenworth that was full. Logan loves to play and is a smart little guy! He will make a great family pet!

Lindsay

Lindsay is six weeks old and is a Pointer mix. She came to us, along with her littermates, from a shelter in Leavenworth, Kansas that was full. When shelters are full, often animals like Lindsay and her littermates are euthanized at other shelters. Are you her second chance at life?

Expert Opinion:
Do I Adopt a Puppy or an Adult Dog?
by Jessica Braun, DVM
dog adoptionThere isn’t a puppy around that isn’t adorable, and helping a puppy grow can certainly be a fun and rewarding experience!

But before you pick out that oh-so-cute bundle of fur and take him or her home, take a moment to consider some of the advantages of adopting an adult dog instead.

Many adult dogs you find at shelters are already house trained and may require less work and time than a puppy.

Adult dogs are often easier to train than pups simply because their attention span is longer. Most adult dogs (over 2 years) have passed through their destructive chewing phase already. Also, if you adopt an adult dog, you will be helping with the pet overpopulation crisis.

Many people want a puppy to grow up with their children, but keep in mind that puppies love to chew—especially on little children! Puppies also need to go outside to the restroom every few hours, they need to eat 3-4 times daily, they require lots of training, and are often destructive. Adding a puppy to your home is like adding a toddler—they truly require that much supervision.

Deciding on a frisky pup or more mature dog really involves an assessment of your level of commitment for the workload required. Both can be rewarding experiences for the entire family.
